Egypt: A Justified Coup?
From our friend in Cairo…”To summarize our situation:
The majority of the Egyptian people were extremely disappointed with Morsi’s rule. He failed to bring about security or improve the economy. His rule was not inclusive of the 50 percent who did not vote for him. He gave himself dictatorial powers by fiat. He rammed a constitution down our throats. He disrespected the law. His supporters sieged our constitutional court to prevent it from issuing rulings against his decrees. He wanted to give Sinai to Israel to solve the Palestinian problem at our expense. He wanted to rent the Pyramids to Qatar! He wanted to sell areas around the Suez Canal to investors. He appointed his cronies in key positions. As Governor of Luxor, he appointed someone who belongs to the terrorist organization that carried the tourist massacre of 1997. He accused all judges of corruption and wanted to replace them by unqualified loyals. Figureheads of political Islam insulted the army. He allowed the Supreme Leader of the Muslim Brothers – who was unelected – to rule behind the scenes. And when the opposition movement grew stronger, he and his supporters threw insults and accusations at them rather than try to understand their grievances or reach some consensus. He accused the independent media of corruption. As for the common man, there is high inflation. Electricity outages are frequent and for one hour at a time. Gas shortages have disrupted lives and the economy. In the past year, Morsi has made one policy mistake after another. He succeeded in uniting the opposition. Twenty two million signed a petition to oust him. Thirty million went out in protest against Him in the streets all over Egypt demanding early elections. When he refused, the army carried out the will of the people. We are elated but recognize that his supporters will resort to violence to come back to power. We expect turbulence in the weeks ahead but are confident that we shall overcome. The Egyptians who opposed Morsi are disappointed that the U.S. administration is still supporting the hated Muslim Brotherhood regime so whole heartedly.
Thanks for your interest in understanding.”
